WALII TRAINING
WALII will establish a training program with an emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and retention for undergraduate, graduate, postbac, and postdoctoral trainees. Trainees will collaborate among WALII labs, cross-train between multiple labs, and be mentored by individuals from at least two labs. Long-term, bidirectional mentorship will be provided at all levels from summer interns to senior faculty.

Training and Education at WALII will happen at all career stages, from undergraduates to faculty, with exposure to new tools, approaches, and biological systems. We will emphasize the participation of underrepresented groups by proactively recruiting trainees from Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Mentorship will include work-life balance, trainee agency, and workplace climate. We will emphasize long-term mentorship and invoke measures that continue to support alumni after their tenure at WALII. Monthly seminars and quarterly multidisciplinary training workshops will ensure that trainees are aware of the research, tools, and techniques available in other labs. Trainees will be encouraged to travel to other WALII labs to network, learn new techniques, and experience new research environments. Trainees will hold leadership positions across WALII and will participate in decision-making and administration of the Institute. As synergy increases, we expect unplanned projects to surface and will foster such activities.
