MISSION
WALII aims to understand how life continues without water (anhydrobiosis) from the molecular to the whole organism and evolutionary levels. WALII members seek to understand the methods that organisms have evolved to survive both desiccation and rehydration, and if these strategies are similar for all organisms, or if different organisms have evolved different methods. In pursuit of this mission, WALII conducts collaborative, interdisciplinary, and cutting-edge research; trains researchers to be the foundation of an anhydrobiosis science community; and makes that science accessible to and inclusive of the general public.
VISION
WALII envisions a future in which an inclusive and diverse community of scientists advances understanding of how life survives without water, and engages the public with anhydrobiosis science. A future of scientific breakthroughs with important societal applications, such as improving crop resilience to drought and food storage, conservation, medicine, and space exploration thanks to new insights into this fundamental aspect of life.
